T
hank you for
your interest
in writing to me about key-
less entry systems for your
front, side and garage
doors. These systems can
increase the security of
your home because it is
much more difficult for a
thief to open these locks. Most regular
tumbler locks are secure when they are new,
but as they wear with use, they become easier
to pick. If you lose your keys, there will not
be a house key for someone to find and use.
Keyless entry systems are also better for
your personal security because it allows you
to get into your house quicker. Even if you
are familiar with your front door lock, it can
take some time to find the key and get it into
the keyhole. The longer that you stand at
your front door, the more time that a thief has
to attack you. It is certainly less expensive
than leaving outdoor security lights on.
There are many keyless entry options
from completely electronic remote ones to

Selected Manufacturers of Keyless Entry/Security Systems
BRIDGEPORT SYSTEMS, 1555 Doolittle Dr., Suite 110, San Leandro, CA 94577 - (866) 562-5875 www.intelock.com
model - “Intelock” type - keyless door entry
features - With InteLock you open your door with a simple 3 or 4 digit electronic code which is displayed on a bright LED readout-
-it's visible day and night. The code is easy to change. An alternate code gives temporary access to housekeepers, repair services,
pet sitters, and anyone else who might need to get in when you're not there. As soon as that person no longer needs access, just
erase the alternate code. This system includes a mechanical key option which prevents lockouts due to forgotten codes. It includes
a tamper alarm - sounds if incorrect code is entered. It runs on batteries so only a screwdriver is needed to install one in a door.
CHAMBERLAIN/LIFTMASTER, 845 Larch Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126 - (800) 528-5880 www.chamberlain.com
model - “Model 976LM” type - garage door keypad
features - “Model 976LM” is a wireless keyless system to open garage doors. It comes with Security+ antiburglary
technology. While your password remains constant until you change it, the code between the keyless entry and the
receiver changes with each use, randomly accessing over 100 billion new codes. It mounts to your garage door jamb
and lets you open your garage door without a remote control or key. This keyless entry also features a temporary
password option so relatives, friends or baby sitters can have limited access to your home without giving them your
private security code. The 976LM model is a professionally installed model to be used with their garage door openers.
Do-it-yourself models are also available.
DOMINO ENGINEERING CORP., PO Box 376, Taylorville, IL 62568 - (800) 736-6466 www.dominoengineering.com
model - “Model GD-1” type - universal garage door keypad
model - “Model SC20” type - universal keypad for electric door strikes, magnetic locks
features - “Model GD-1” is compatible with all garage door openers because it basically functions as just a remote switch. It
consists of an outside, permanently mounted keypad, and inside control box. It is vandal resistant — the keypad
shuts off for one minute after five wrong entries have been pressed. It has a weatherproof flip-up cover that
protects the unit against the elements. You can pick your own personal code — from one to six digit codes may
be chosen (over one million possibilities). It has a lighted keypad so it is easy to see at night. An additional
indicator light provides verification as each individual key is pressed. The lights dim to indicate that it is time
to change the three AA batteries. After the code is entered and the garage door opener is activated, you can
press the “enter” key to stop or reverse the door without reentering the code. The “enter” key remains active
for twenty seconds. There is an additional push button that is located on the control box. “Model SC20”
consists of two parts — the keypad and a small terminal block/control module. The control module is de-
signed to be hidden inside a wall or in an electrical junction box. It contains the modular jack for the RJ11
connector from the keypad and seven screw terminals for remote push button(s), relay output (common,
normally open, and normally closed), and power input. Power requirements are 12-24 VAC/DC. There are up
to twenty user codes.

deadbolts. All of the ones that
I have listed are of good qual-
ity. Read through the product
features to determine
which ones will meet
your specific needs.
If you do find a re-
mote one at your
home center or hardware
store, make sure that it uses a
“rolling code” technology. This automati-
cally changes the electronic code among over
a billion codes so that a thief cannot capture it
with an electronic code grabber. The Kwikset
Powerbolt 1000 is an excellent full-featured
model. It is powered by four AA batteries.
The newest Kwikset SmartScan model uses a
fingerprint reader to determine if the person
should have access to open the lock. It can
store up to 50 fingerprints.
The fully mechanical ones, like Preso-
matic and Lockey, are very secure and du-
rable, but it is more difficult to change the
combination, although it can be done. Lockey
Kaba Ilco
has the cleanest-looking mechanical mod-
els. If you are replacing your front
door, a Masonite Welcome Watch
door is a good choice for efficient
security.
